Adaptive Corrective Control Strategies for Preventing Power System Blackouts

چکیده
In order to investigate power system security and design appropriate control strategies, power systems can be conceptually classified into five operational states: Normal, Alert, Emergency, In Extremis, and Restorative. Various preventive and corrective control strategies have been studied to cope with power systems in the different operational states. Our approach primarily focuses on the corrective control strategies for power systems under emergency and in extremis states. In this paper, two corrective control approaches (transmission system reconfiguration and controlled system islanding) have been investigated and new algorithms have been developed. When the system is in the emergency state, two reconfiguration strategies, line switching and bus-bar switching, have been presented to solve the problems of overloads or voltage violations. Furthermore, to prevent a total system black out, a slow coher-ency grouping based adaptive power system islanding approach using minimal cutsets has been presented to deal with catastrophic events when power system vulnerability analysis indicates that the system is approaching the in extremis state. A controlled under frequency load shedding scheme with the rate of frequency decline is also proposed to balance the real power within each island and aid restoration. The verification of our approach is proven with simulations on a 179-bus, 29generator WECC system.

In recent years several catastrophic power systems blackouts have occurred worldwide. Various reasons have been declared for these failures. Economical limitations due to power system restructuring restrictions, inadvertent operation of protective relays and inefficient design of conventional load shedding schemes are of the most important reasons causing these blackouts. In fact, due to both e...
متن کاملControl and prediction for blackouts caused by frequency collapse in smart grids.
The electric power system is one of the cornerstones of modern society. One of its most serious malfunctions is the blackout, a catastrophic event that may disrupt a substantial portion of the system, playing havoc to human life and causing great economic losses. Thus, understanding the mechanisms leading to blackouts and creating a reliable and resilient power grid has been a major issue, attr...
متن کاملReducing the Risk of Major Blackouts through Improved Power System Visualization
Many blackouts occur with time scales that would permit emergency control by the operators. However, in order to perform this control the operators need to quickly know the state of system and implement timely, corrective control actions. This paper describes several visualization techniques that can be used to provide this information. Techniques discussed include the use of dynamically sized ...

Power system blackouts have become a serious problem for electric utilities especially in recent years. Different forms of system instability have emerged in recent blackouts, such as voltage instability and frequency instability. To counteract each form of system instability, special algorithms have been designed in the protection system, e.g. Under Frequency Load Shedding (UFLS) and Under Vol...

Modern power grids are continuously monitored by trained system operators equipped with sophisticated monitoring and control systems. Despite such precautionary measures, large blackouts, that affect more than a million consumers, occur quite frequently. To prevent such blackouts, it is important to perform high-order contingency analysis in real time. However, contingency analysis is computati...
